Our project focuses on the genre of country music. It aims to create a narrative-driven video that emphasizes storytelling and emotional connections, exploring themes like love and personal growth. The campaign will showcase the traditions and values of country music while establishing a brand identity for Faye Harper, a Salina, Kansas-based artist. Faye gained popularity by posting country covers on YouTube and TikTok, and at 23, she moved to Nashville, where she signed with Capitol Records Nashville and released her song "Need You Now." 

Representation Blog

 In the show, “Monsters,” Menendez brothers Erik and Lyle are represented with very different stereotypes, highlighting masculinity and vulnerability. Lyle's character is portrayed as very protective and aggressive. This representation can be seen in various moments throughout the show when he is yelling or resorting to violence, which reinforces stereotypes relating to anger and intensity. Lyle’s character expresses the idea that men should not show vulnerability in emotions. This portrayal restricts the understanding of masculinity, creating the impression that strength only comes from aggression. 

Contrastingly, Erik is shown as a more emotional and “weaker” character, which is more often associated with a female or sometimes gay persona. Females and homosexuals are typically displayed with softer manners, differentiating with Lyle’s character significantly. This contrast reinforces the idea that sensitivity is a negative trait in men.  

The representation shown within both brothers emphasizes society’s opinion surrounding gender and masculinity. The show illustrates the impact different stereotypes can affect a personal identity, also suggesting that men can either exist as really masculine figures or emotional outcasts.

Sound Project

The sound lesson and assigned videos gave me an improved understanding to the media world. I learned about the different techniques and uses of sound and how they are incorporated differently depending on specific situations. In addition, I discovered that mostly if not all the sound is lost during filming, so foley artists are responsible to recreate them using different and louder objects/instruments to dramatize a sound. 

The directions for the Sound Project were to create a soundscape that captures a story only using sounds. Working with 1 partner chosen at random, we would create an outline for our desired scene, which varies from 1-2 minutes. Actual dialogue was limited, and only 7 words were allowed, if we chose to add them to our project. Our understanding of foleys would be tested, as 4 or more of the sounds included in the project were required to be foleys. The creation of these sounds would be recorded and submitted as 1 out of the 3 files we would submit. The other 2 were 1-3 images of our audio editing timeline, and the complete soundscape. The submission for the foley recording is the last names of both group members_foley_period, and the submission for the soundscape is the last names of both group members_soundscape_period.

During brainstorming, my partner and I considered all our options and approaches on our scene, avoiding the unavailable ones or the example provided in the directions. Once an overall theme was chosen, we broke it down into different scenes to incorporate multiple layers of sound within each scene. To organize, we were instructed to use an outline. This outline allowed us to picture how each sound would fit with one another. Once fully thought out, we began the editing process. Here is a picture of part of our editing timeline:

Overall, I was quite impressed with our project for it being our first time, though there is always room for improvement. Therefore, some things I'd improve for next time are my editing skills. It was very challenging layering sounds and combining them smoothly. Volume for every sound is crucial and can often be a miss if not done well. I would like to elevate my foley sounds by being more creative with them next time. Aside from that, I think the combination of our sounds was very well done.

OWF Project

      The objective of the One Word Film project was to work in pairs to create a 1-1:30 minute film based on one word only. In preparation for that, we are also assigned a brainstorming sheet and a storyboard to help us plan out our project effectively. The brainstorming sheet would highlight the number of shots we'd use and the different shots and techniques we were recently taught, while the storyboard helped us visualize our piece. There is no dialogue or actual words allowed in the film, and no sound aside from optional instrumental music and sound effects. The word my partner and I were given was Concerned. 

      My approach began with the brainstorming sheet, which as I explained previously, allowed my partner and I to plan out and include our initial ideas for this project. Here is a picture of both front and back: 

        Next, I continued my planning with a storyboard. It allowed me to pre-visualize my project by putting my thoughts into pictures. This way, I could see which shots would actually work well together and which shots I'd like to change to better emphasize my understanding of all the techniques, shots, and angles & composition. 

      To bring all of this together, once I had my footage, I used the app iMovie to guide me through the editing process.

       I believe I did a great job at this project for it being my first time. I was quite proud of myself for eliminating any jump cuts and using my thinking to fit together all the scenes under 2 minutes. I really enjoyed the way I incorporated my flashback and how I edited it to get the message across. Each shot was perfectly sequenced, and I had much satisfaction with the overall project. Something I wish I could go back and change, however, is to take off the sound for one of the shots I took, which unfortunately, made it to the final cut. In a quick 4 second shot, I am heard saying, "Look at the camera real quick,'' and as the directions insist on no sound nor dialogue, I was very disappointed to find out I left one small mistake. I also think adding instrumental music would elevate my project by elevating the mood of concern as well.

Blog Posting Activity

     The Camera Shots Quiz consisted of 15 pictures taken horizontally that should tell a story. These shots emphasize our understanding of the shots and angles we have learned in class, each shot/angle being explained in a PowerPoint slide. My partner and I approached this method by thoroughly planning our shots beforehand and following that plan; We also split up the work evenly so it's a fair amount of work between both of us. I believe our project was well done but we missed one slide and unfortunately weren't able to submit in time. Aside from that, I think the idea shared throughout the pictures is well executed and all shots that were asked for were there.
